First off, we want to announce that the Video Games Show with Chris Hoss and Rich Bergin is NOT OVER, you can find their new feed at VideoGamesShow.net. Catan has hit Xbox Live Arcade demoless - can I have some ore? What other board games would work well on XBLA? The Gears of War Map Pack is out, and costs money for four months. The PS Home Closed Beta has begun, and we were misled at GDC about the ability to sign up, although the process they're using to beta test is sound. Puzzle Quest is coming to XBLA - right after we got the PSP version. A student who made a Counterstrike mod of his high school has been transferred and will not be allowed to graduate with his classmates. We tell a story of a DOOM remake done in 1995 and the reaction from the school faculty was quite the opposite. Plus, we take calls about media violence and Spider-Man 3's camera, which are possibly related. Next week - a look at the E3 that won't be - email us your thoughts to blackwolf@allgames.com !
We begin the show by reminiscing about the horrendus steps we went through to get Wing Commander to work on our old DOS machine. Remember AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS? We do! Coming back to 2007, we talk about Pinball FX and Puzzle Quest for the PSP - however we're prepared to get shafted in both titles in the future. Another guy who got the shaft was good ol' Ken Kutaragi, stepping down from his post at Sony - but another company has publically stated that they'd love to have him on their team! Folding@home has been used for a short time by 250,000 PS3's - we clear up some misconceptions about who's behind Folding@home and what it's purpose is. (Join team #57280!) A while ago we speculated that the 360 would lose some exclusives just like Sony did - well we were right, although they're not as high profile. And Square-Enix says that we'll be playing in the Final Fantasy XIII universe for ten years - which really isn't all that unheard of if you put it in the right context. Then we turn over the show to the listeners who...don't react. Although we did discuss Toys R' Us's apparent new policy of hiding M-rated games behind the counter and the idea of categorizing games by genre like movies rather than alphabetical by platform. And chat steers us in the direction of talking about actors in FMV's for games old and new.
This week we have a live phone interview from the Crocodile Bay Resort in Costa Rica about Nokia's upcoming mobile fishing game Creatures of the Deep. Producer Mike Smith and Games Marketing Manager for Nokia Brandon Crick tell us all about the new game and even give some tips on how to get into the industry. Be sure to listen in to see how to win a free fishing hat or t-shirt! We report on a story that, at the time, had no red herrings, but we were quickly informed by our live chat room that the story was QUITE FAKE and that Square Enix did NOT really change their business strategy to concentrate on remakes. However, Microsoft DID add new games to the Backwards Compatability list for the Xbox 360, and some of the games were ones people were clamoring for. The latest PS3 Firmware (version 1.70 for those of you counting) now allows for your downloaded PSOne titles to play on your PS3, and you can even transfer game saves between your PS3 and your PSP. Then we take calls about Sam & Max Episode 5: Reality 2.0, getting Raiden III from Gamestop, the whole Jack Thompson thing with regards to current events, and an update on Zappy trying to fix his PSP which ends in him hanging up due to a horrible joke gone even horribler. (Is that even a word?)
There were tons of technical difficulties during the recording of this episode, hence why it took a little bit for it to be presentable. Super Paper Mario is out and brings out the anti-reading crowd. Reading is Fundamental! The final Wii browser is now out, but since shortages are going to continue for quite some time, will you be able to get it before it is no longer free? Sony is discontinuing the 20GB PS3 because there is definately NOT a shortage of those units. Guitar Hero II's downloadable content has arrived, and we are no longer on the fence about the pricing. (Hint: it sucks.) For those of you playing Oblivion on your PC and have the Shivering Isles expansion, there is a bug that will destroy your game so patch it right away! We also shed some light about what the Halo 3 beta REALLY is, as well as an observation about Grand Theft Auto IV. We take calls about Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Justice League, as well as the Guitar Hero II pricing.
Guitar Hero II is released on the Xbox 360 - prepare for achievement whoring - as long as you don't have a faulty whammy bar. Is it faulty because of the hardware or becuase of the software? MotorStorm released an update on the PS3 to allow for friends list compatability, however the way you install it doesn't make much sense. Harmonix attempted to lure us away from Guitar Hero II with Rock Band. Microsoft has changed the Xbox 360 Warranty Policy again and pledged to not allow pretexting to be successful in their customer care centers. Also, a video was leaked to show the Spring Dashboard Update which incluides a new Marketplace blade as well as Messenger integration. Then we take calls about the PSP, the Dreamcast, and the PS3's price point.
